English Heritage is a non-departmental public body of the British Government that manage the historic built environment of England, they are best known for their role as the steward of over 400 significant historical and archaeological sites. sketchmap use their data to display the location and status of listed buildings, scheduled monuments, registered parks and gardens, world heritage sites, and battlefields.

Battlefields

This layer contains 43 important historic English battlefields, with the name and year displayed in the 'info' box. The purpose is to protect these sites and promote a better understanding of their significance.

Listed buildings

Many buildings and monuments are given listed building status because of their special architectural or historical importance. This information layer displays the locations and grades of these specially conserved structures.

Parks and Gardens

This layer displays the locations of designated parks and gardens, divided into three grades. Local authorities are required by central government to make provision for the protection of these parks and gardens in their policies and resource allocation.

Scheduled Monuments

There are over 200 'classes' of specially preserved monuments on the schedule. Ranging from prehistoric standing stones and burial mounds on medieval sites such as castles, monasteries and villages, to more recent examples, such as 20th century remains from the coal industry, World War II and the Cold War.

World Heritage Sites
